Chiltern Rail Refurbishment Programme

In the ongoing development of our range of LED rail lighting products and services, McGeoch has been involved in a major project to refurbish all the Mk3 Coaching Stock for Chiltern Rail. Here we take a look at the project . . . The Project The refurbishment of the Mk3 coaching stock for Chiltern Rail; the project involves conversion of the ageing rolling stock and installation of modern systems to a very high standard including an upgrade to interior LED lighting. The Design & Modification Team Delta Rail were commissioned for the design work and Wabtec were awarded the contract to carry out the conversion and refurbishment work; McGeoch was tasked to provide ceiling rafts with integrated LED lighting to compliment the modern styled interior. Lighting Design The ceiling raft design comprised of a centre strip light, spot lights and downwash lighting to provide excellent illumination to the table areas and the downwash lights provide a decorative cone of light to the luggage stowage shelves. LED step lights were also provided along with LED lighting for the vestibules and toilet modules. The lighting design is keyed to the window spacing’s and careful attention was made to ensure perfect colour matching between LEDs for uniformity. A battery maintained emergency system is built into each ceiling raft and provides double the duration required in Group Standards, it produces so much light that evacuation procedures will not be necessary during power failure; the uniformity of light produced is a perfect score of 1.
